KCS cricket is alive and well. This may seem a strange comment for a school where cricket has traditionally been very strong, but over the last few years, the brevity of the summer term and the increased number of public exams have put enormous pressure on school cricket. At KCS we have ridden the storm and have an increasing number of boys playing the sport to a high level. Seven teams are fielded on a competitive circuit; two at U14, two at U15 and three senior sides. All sides have had considerable success in recent times, usually producing winning seasons as well as winning trophies at county level. There is an impressive coaching structure in the school, making use of staff expertise as well as employing professional coaches for specialist skills throughout the school and not just for the top sides. We try to develop cricketers of all abilities wherever possible and have also close links with Wimbledon Cricket Club in the Surrey Premiership.
KCS has produced a number of outstanding cricketers over the years, who have represented their county at schoolboy level as well a number who have gone on to play in the first class game. The most notable in recent times is Russell Cake, who scored a century against the Australians for the Combined Universities in 1993 (only the second Englishman that summer to do so!)
The school 1st XI has toured the Caribbean on a number of occasions and continues to do so. Indeed there is a tour leaving for Grenada in July 2005. These tours are seen as a way of developing cricketing skills as well as educating them in a different way of life and promoting friendships. We have also run tours for the junior sides to the Channel Islands.
